1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 070900 I Feb 51 at an unknown area approx 12 km NE of HOENGSONG (DS 1149).
INTERROGATOR: GNY

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and talked freely. Information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted 26 Aug 50 at CHINNAMPO (YC 0592). He underwent 1 month of basic infantry training and was assigned to the 918th Coastal Arty Regt. There were approximately 20 x 74.4mm “2162” type coastal guns in this unit which were entrenched along the coast of CHINNAMPO. There was on Russian advisor, a naval officer (rank and name unk), who inspected this unit twice weekly.
27 Sep 50 PW departed with unit northward, arriving at HANCHON (YD 0941) 3 days later. Unit left its guns at CHINNAMPO because there was no means of transportation. Here, the 918th Coastal Gun Regt was deactivated.
1 Oct 50, PW departed with 50 others eastwardly, via unknown mountain route, and arrived at CHANGNIM-NI a week later. In the mountains here, stragglers from various units were integrated and formed a unit designated as the Independent 1st Bn. There were approximately 240 troops in this unit; commander of the unit was a captain whose name was unknown. This unit hid in the mountains between CHANGNIM-NI and YANGDOK (BU 5647).
14 Nov 50, PW heard from his superior officer that the CCF will aid the NKA. The following day, the 1st Bn was joined another unit designated as the 2nd Bn, and departed the area southward, passing through the following places:

At HWANJU the 1st Bn was separated from the 2nd Bn and it alone headed eastward; its mission was to coerce the villages to pay taxes but not to actually collect the money. The 1st Bn passed through the following places:

At HONGCHON, the Independent 1st Bn was integrated into the 12th Div and redesignated as the 3rd Bn, 1st Regt. PW underwent training and received communist indoctrination with the battalion for about a week.
16 Jan 51 PW departed this area with the 12th Div southward and arrived at HOENGSONG (DS 1149) 22 Jan 51. For 9 days PW again received communist indoctrination and was assigned duty as a guard.
2 Feb 51, this unit was attacked by UN units, and, during the 12th Div retreat, PW deserted. 7 Feb PW voluntarily surrendered.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
On 3 Feb 51, PW heard from other NKA soldiers that the 12th Div CP was located approximately 40 km NE of HOENGSONG. PW heard from his superior officer that the mission of the 12th Division was to defend HOENGSONG area at all costs.

V Corps: 7th, 12th, code name: YALU River and 38th Inf Division.
12th Div: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Inf Regiments, Med Dispensary, Supply Depot, Recon Plat.
1st Regt: 3 Inf Regiments, Medical Dispensary, Supply Depot, Automatic Weapons Co, Signal Plat.
3rd Bn: 3 Rifle companies, HMG Co, Med Plat, Supply Plat, Mortar Co.
9th Co: 3 Rifle Plat.
1st Plat: 3 Rifle Sqd.

PW states that the 12th Division was a reserve unit, which suffered a few casualties when it was shelled in the HOENGSONG area on 3 Feb 51.

d. Personalities:
CH’OE Chang Bok (崔昌福) (최창복), Jr Lt, Plat Ldr, 1st Plat, 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 1st Regt, 12th Div.

e. Replacements:
The 12th Division received none.

f. Supplies:
Food was obtained through confiscation. The 12th Div received no ammo.

g. Armor, Artillery and Aircraft:
PW heard from the company executive officer that, in the near future, the CCF armor units will support the 12th Division.

h. Signal:
Telephones were utilized in battalion and higher echelon units. Runners were employed in lower echelon units.

i. Morale:
Morale was low because of insufficient food and clothing. The 12th Div was composed of inexperienced troops, who feared artillery and bombs. Desertions were common.

j. Medical:
Approximately 20% of the 12th Division’s soldiers had contacted abdominal typhus.
Patients were removed to the rear.

k. Psychological Warfare:
PW voluntarily surrendered because the communists did not practice what they preached.
He saw no leaflets.
