2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. PW was a student prior to entering military service with the CNA. Information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

50th Army is composed of the 148th, 149th, and 150th Div with an Arty Regt, Guard Bn and Sig Bn attached. 148th Div is composed of the 442nd, 443rd, and 444th Regt with an Arty Bn, Guard Bn and Sig Co attached. 443rd Regt is composed of 3 rifle Bn, with an Arty Co, Guard Co and Sig Co attached. 3rd Bn is composed of 3 rifle Co and HMG Co, Mortar Sqd and Sig Sqd. The 9th Co is composed of 3 rifle plat and Mortar Sqd.

Majority of casualties were caused by air strikes. Only a few lost contact with the unit and few died of illness.
Arty Regt (atchd to 50th Army) had 12 x 76mm M1938 guns 9 Nov 50, date on which the unit crossed the border. Arty Bn (atchd to 148th Div) had 12 x 82mm 1941 mortars 9 Nov 50. Arty Co (atchd to 443rd Regt) had 7 x 82mm mortars 9 Nov 50. HMG Co had 3 x 1931 HMG when it crossed the border. Mortar sqd (atchd to 9th Co) had 3 x 60mm mortars when it crossed the border. Each rifle co had 9 LMG (model unk).

b. Mission:
PW had no knowledge nor did he hear of the mission of his unit. Because PW was a former CNA soldier he was distrusted by his superiors and was never briefed on future plans.

c. Disposition:
149th Div and 150th Div were located to the rear of the 148th Div, in the vicinity of SEOUL. PW heard from two of his men who rejoined his unit, that the 39th Army was regrouping at SEOUL on or about 14 Jan 51.

d. Communication:
Portable telephones (IN: Field phone) were utilized for communications between Regt and Bn. Runners were used for communications between Co and platoons.

g. Morale:
70% of EM in PW unit had low morale because of insufficient clothing, lack of food and hatred towards communism. The physical condition of EM in PW unit is poor because of insufficient food and over exhaustion.

h. Chronology:
PW volunteered for the CNA, 93rd Army 30 Jan 51 at MENTZU(■自). 1 Oct 48 captured by the CCF at INSEN and was a prisoner of war for eight months. 1 Jun 49, integrated into his present unit. The entire 50th Army arrived at ANTUNG in Oct 50. The 148th Div crossed the border on foot 12 days after arriving in ANTUNG from LINCHIANG(臨江). After crossing the border the 148th Div arrived at SHANPULING(山■領) and remained there for approximately one month then marched back to ANTUNG travelling over the same route. 9 Nov 50, the 443rd Regt marched into KOREA via SINUIJU arriving at CHONGCHON River in Dec 50. The 443rd Regt then marched southward during the night over the main supply route and arrived at P’YONGYANG 20 Dec 50. The 443rd Regt continued marching and entered SEOUL 8 Jan 51. 10 Jan 51 the 443rd Regt crossed over the frozen HAN River on foot arriving at an unknown place which was approximately 17 km SE of SEOUL. The 443rd Regt rested for 12 days and regrouped at this location. 27 Jan 51, the Regt marched southward for two days.
29 Jan 51, the Regt was engaged by ROK elements and PW was captured while hiding in a foxhole.

i. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food was insufficient. Food was procured locally and food supplies were not transported from CHINA since the unit arrived in KOREA.
As of 30 Jan 51, each rifleman had 60 rd and 4 hand-grenades. PW had no knowledge of any ammo being transported from rear areas.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW saw two different type of US surrender leaflets 29 Jan 51 and since then he had a desire to desert but due to his position he had not had the opportunity to do so.

k. Captured Equipment:
There were 18 US grease-guns in his unit and they were being utilized.

l. Prisoners of War:
PW observed four US PW in Nov 50 at LINCHIANG (臨江), MANCHURIA.

m. Foreign Technicians:
There was one Chinese interpreter (Korean) assigned to each Bn.

n. Medical:
Malaria is the most common disease in PW unit. Malaria patients were given pills (type unk) twice a day. No preventative measures were being practiced to control the spreading of diseases.
