PW cooperative; talked freely; reliability: fair.
10 Sep 50: Inducted at a trng center at CHUNCHON (CS 8992). Received 15 days basic trng and assigned to 4th Bn of u/k unit.
25 Sep 50: 4th Bn (400 men) dep CHUNCHON on foot.
26 Sep 50: Arr HONGCHON (DS 0271). Bn engaged in digging fox holes. 100 officers newly assigned to 4th Bn.
1 Oct 50: 4th Bn dep HONGCHON on foot, headed N due to UN advance.
Early Nov 50: Approx 480 officers and EM arr CHANGJIN, NK and joined other remnant recruits who were also in retreat. 38th Div was activated here; strength: 1,800. PW assigned to 2nd Regt, 3rd Bn, 8th Co, Medics.
20 Nov 50: 38th Div dep CHANGJIN on foot, headed south.
10 Jan 51: 38th Div arr WONJU (DS 0833) via KOKSAN, ICHON (CS 6227), and YANGGU (DT 1218).
20 Jan 51: Due to personnel of 38th Div being inexperienced unit dep WONJU for HONGGHON for deactivation. At HONGCHON, 2 co were picked from the 38th Div as the Recon Bn for the V Corps. Rest of the personnel were reassigned to the 6th, 7th, 12th and 27th Div.
21 Jan 51: Recon Bn dep HONGCHON for NOJANG NI (12 km E of HONGCHON) and arr same day.
2 Feb 51: Only 2nd Co of Recon Bn dep NOJANG NI and headed for WONJU. After reconnoitering the WONJU area and making obs of UN troops, the 2nd Co headed east and stopped at a temple (E of WONJU).
4 Feb 51: PW assigned as guard and deserted.
V Corps composed of 6th, 7th, 12th and 27th Divs.
Serving units attached to Corps: Recon Bn (3 ea; 225 men), Med Bn, Sig Bn, Engr Bn and Guard Bn.
100/PPSH SMG w/1-2 drums each and the rest were Russ rifles w/50 rd ea.
Recon Bn: KUNSA GAN
1. 27 Jan 51: Obs V Corps Hq 8 km E of NOJANG-NI. There were six houses in vic and only one was used as Hq.
2. 27 Jan 51: Heard that one CCF bn was in close to the V Corps area.
3. UN PW: 2 Feb 51: 2 US PW (1 Negro) obs at NOJANG-NI, 11 ROK obs approx 12 km E of HONGCHON.
