ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 4425

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS 0146)　22 November 1950

(REF TO ATIS RPT NO. 2454)

PW was cooperative. Appeared to be fairly intelligent and had a fairly good memory. Gave information to the best of his knowledge. Acquired information was not too reliable.

Mar 38 - Dec 43 - Engaged in farming at TUNGHUA-SHENG, LIUCHO-HSIEN, WUTAOKOU-TSUN, MANCHURIA (滿洲 通化省 柳河縣 王道溝村)

29 Dec 43 – Sep 44 – Employed at a paper mfg factory at MUKDEN (奉天).

Sep 44 – Feb 45 – Engaged in farming at WUTAOKOU (五道溝), MANCHURIA.

Feb 45 – Departed for SEOUL (서울), KOREA and was employed at the NITTO SHOKUIN KABUSHIRI KAISHA (日本ツヨクイソ株式會社).

Jun 45 – Returned to WUTAOEOU and engaged in farming.

16 May 45 – Volunteered for the local security unit at SHANYUANPU (三源浦).

16 May 46 – 15 Aug 46 – PW took his military training at SHANYUANPU (三源浦), MANCHURIA.

Mid-Aug 46 – 3 Oct 46 – PW was assigned to the 3d Army, 8th Div, 24th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, 2d Plat, 6th Sqd, at HAILUNG (海龍), MANCHURIA. PW was an infantryman.

3 Oct 46 – Mar 47 – PW unit engaged in combat against the Chinese Nationalist Army during the above-mentioned period. Place names where PW and his unit moved during combat were not known. However, the following few fairly large place names and arrival dates were known.

Nov 46 – WANGCHAOMEN (汪靑門), MANCHURIA. Stayed overnight.

Nov 46 – HUANJEN (柦仁), MANCHURIA. Stayed one day.

26 Dec 46 – PATAOCHIANG (八道江), MANCHURIA. Stayed about ten days.

20 Jan 47 – TIEHCHANG (鐵場), MANCHURIA. Stayed about two days.

Mar 47 – Hospitalized in a field hospital which was situated at KUSHANTZU (■山子), MANCHURIA, due to frostbite.

Apr 47 – Transferred to No. 1 hospital at TAYULTZU (大栗子), MANCHURIA.

4 Jul 47 – Mar 48 – Discharged from the No. 1 hospital and PW was assigned to the Security Bn, 1st Co, 3rd Plat, 9th Sqd at TUNGHUA-HSIEN (通化縣), MANCHURIA. PW was assigned as the 10th Sqd leader.

23 Mar 48 – 23 Apr 48 – Above unit was assigned to the 4th Ind Div. PW was assigned to the 497th Inf Regt, 82mm Mortar Co, 2nd Plat, 4th Sqd at KAOSHANTUN (高山屯). PW was assigned as a mortar man.

23 Apr 48 – 15 Nov 48 – Above unit, constantly moved to and from MUKDEN (奉天) and CHANGCHUN (長春), MANCHURIA.

15 Nov 48 – 23 May 49 – Above unit stayed at HUANGKUCHU (皇姑区), MANCHURIA. Unit’s personnel were assigned as guard soldiers of above named place.

o/a Jan 49 – The 4th Ind Div changed its numerals to 166th Ind Div which was composed of only Koreans.

23 May 49 – 10 Aug 49 – About 1,000 Korean soldiers of the foregoing unit were ordered to go to NAMSINUIJU (南新義州), Korea to be trained for a period of two (2) months. Groups of 200 were trained in the use of the following weapons: 82mm Mortars, 120mm Mortars, 76mm Division and Regimental Guns, and 45mm AT Guns.

o/a Jul 49 – The entire 166th Ind Div moved to NAMSINUIJU (南新義州) from HUANGKUCHU (皇姑区), MANCHURIA. Upon arrival at NAMSINUIJU, the former 166th Ind Div and components were changed to 6th Div. PW was assigned to the 657th Regt, 120mm Ind Mortar Co, 2nd Plat, 3rd Sqd. PW was a Sqd leader.

10 Aug 49 – Above unit departed for SARIWON (沙里院), KOREA. Duty was same as above.

20 Jun 50 – Above unit departed to a site 8 km N of KAESONG (開城), KOREA. Preparations were made to encounter the UN Forces.

25 Jun 50 – PW’s unit departed to an unknown place. North of the IMJIN (臨津江) River.

27 Jun 50 – PW’s unit departed for SEOUL.

30 Jun 50 – PW’s unit departed for KUNSAN (郡山).

8 Jul 50 – PW’s unit departed for MASAN (馬山).

20 Aug 50 – PW departed for TAEJON (大田) and was assigned to the TAEJON Brigade, 120mm Ind Mortar Bn, 1st Co, 2nd Plat. PW was a Plt leader.

1 Oct 50 – Captured at MIWON (米院).

SURROUNDING TERRAIN:

The town was encircled by cultivated farm land. To the North about 50 m from the outskirts of town, the ground was 30 m high, and to the South about 4 km from the outskirts of the town, the area was mountainous (the highest peak was about 1,000 m). A mountainous area, 200 m high, was located about 20 m Northeast of the WUTAOKOU RR Station.

STEEL, RR BRIDGE　　　　　　　　　　　　WUTAOKOU (王道溝) MANCHURIA

Located about 800 m FNE of the WUTAOKOU RR Station.

On a few occasions, the PW went to the vicinity of the bridge.

The bridge spanned an unknown river. It measured about 50 m by 2 m wide and was 5 m above the surface of the water.

There were two (2) concrete abutments; one at each end. There was an unknown number of concrete piers, each measuring about three (3) m long by one (1) m wide, and extending 5 m above the water.

The condition of the bridge was fairly good although it was comparatively old.

During the PW’s stay in WUTAOKOU (王道溝), due to the war, trains passed only during the night. The number of trains per night was unknown.

CONCRETE BRIDGE　　　　　　　　　　　WUTAOKOU (王道溝) MANCHURIA

Located about 800 m FNE of the WUTAOKOU RR Station.

During the period mentioned above, PW frequently walked over the concrete bridge while going to WUTAOKOU.

The concrete bridge was about 5 m wide and spanned a 20 m wide river. (Name unknown). The height from the water surface to the concrete bridge was about 2 m.

PW stated that the daily volume of traffic was heavy, but the type of cargo transported by trucks was unknown.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (Manchurian)　　　WUTAOKOU (王道溝) MANCHURIA

Located about 1.5 km East of the WUTAOKOU RR Station.

PW frequently passed neat the elementary school while securing rations.

The bldg was brick and measured about 40 m by 6 m by 8 m high.

There were about four (4) classrooms. The number of students was not known.

There were about (4) Manchurian teacher. The students were all Manchurians.

Children began their schooling at the age of seven (7), eight (8), or nine (9) years, but there was no system of compulsory education.

Due to financial difficulties, many children did not attend school. PW did not know the amount of tuition.

The school hours were as follows:

1st and 2nd grade – 4 hours daily.

3rd to 8th grade – 5 to 6 hours daily.

Saturday was only four (4) hours. The subjects studied were not known.

School began at 0800 and lasted till 1600 hours during the summer, and was from 0900 to 1700 hours during the winter.

The school was operated by the Provincial Education Board.

There was another elementary school which was only for Manchurians. It was located about 1.4 km East of the WUTAOKOU (王道溝) RR Station.

The bldg was wooden and measured about 60 m by 8 m by 6 m high.

PW pressured that there were about 10 Manchurian teachers, but the number of students was not known.

Because the school did not have adequate facilities for the number of students, school hours were divided into two groups of four (4) hours each. The grades ran from 1st to 4th.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (Korean)　　　　　WUTAOKOU (王道溝) MANCHURIA

Located about 1,800 m ENE of the WUTAOKOU RR Station.

PW often passed near the elementary school while securing rations. He also attended school.

The bldg was wooden and measured about 10 m by 6 m by 6 m high.

There were two (2) other bldgs which were also used as elementary schools. Each of the school bldgs had three (3) classrooms, but the capacity was not known.

There were about five (5) Korean teachers. There were about 300 students, all Koreans.

Children began their schooling at the age of seven (7). Eight (8), or nine (9). There were six years of compulsory schooling.

Due to financial difficulties as in the case of Manchurian children, many Korean children did not go to school. PW did not know the present tuition fees. The tuition during PW’s school years was as follows:

1st to 4th grade – 4 yen per month.

5th to 6th grade – 7 yen per month.

PW started that there were two (2) grades in each classroom.

The Korean school taught the following subjects:

Polities, mathematics, abacus, etc.

PW stated that the lessons were changed after August 1945, and new teachers replaced the former ones. No personalities known.

The school hours during the summer and winter were the same as the Manchurian elementary school.

The Korean school was controlled by the Provincial Education Board.

PW stated that most of the teachers had only high school educations. They did not receive any wages but received rations from the farmer in place of wages.

FARMER’S ASSOCIATION　　　　　　　　WUTAKOU (王道溝) MANCHURIA

Located about 50 m East of the WUTAOKOU RR Station.

During the period mentioned above, PW frequently went to the Farmer’s Association to obtain farm products.

The bldg was brick and measured about 40 m by 9 m by 8 m high.

There were about 15 Manchurians employed there.

The Farmer’s Association handled harvested farm products.

During the harvest season, the farmers brought a certain amount of their crops to the Farmer’s Association. The farm products were shipped by rail to an unknown destination. Farm products included rice, kolyang, millet, soy beans and others.

Farmers were paid for the products which they brought to the Farmer’s Association. Prices were unknown.

LOCOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING PLANT　MUKDEN (奉天) MANCHURIA

Located about 4 km North of the MUKDEN RR Station.

PW frequently passed nearby the locomotive manufacturing plant while enrooting to and from his unit which was located at HUANGKUCHU (皇姑区), MANCHURIA.

The total land areas and the number of bldgs was unknown. The outer factory area was enclosed by a concrete wall, 2 m high.

Information concerning the interior was not available, but PW heard that about eight (8) locomotive were manufactured per month. These locomotives were utilized within MUKDEN (奉天), and also sent to CHINA. Exact destination was unknown.

There was a gravel road, 4 m wide, which extended to the North and two (2) single RR Spur lines entered the locomotive manufacturing plant from the East.

LOCAL SECURITY UNIT　　　　　　　　　WUTAOKOU (王道溝) MANCHURIA

The local security unit was located about 2 km FNE of the WUTAOKOU RR Station.

PW on many occasions, passed nearby the local security unit, while after rations.

The personnel of the local security unit were billeted in a wooden bldg which measured about 12 m by 8 m by 3 m until November 1945. The above unit then moved to a tile bldg, which was located about 1.5 km East of The WUTAOKOW RR Station. The measurements of the bldg were as follows.

There was one platoon in the local security unit.

The WUTAOKOU Local Security Unit consisted of the followings:

One commander – rank equivalent to a company commander.

Received about 150 yen per month. Armed with a pistol.

The civilian employees – wages unknown.

One platoon leader.

One assistant platoon leader.

Three squad leaders.

Three assistant squad leaders.

Thirty mon.

Three cooks.

The platoon leader, ass’t platoon leader, squad leaders, men and cooks had no rank, received 20 yen per month and were armed with rifles.

The local security unit received orders from the district government.

There was a security unit of battalion strength at the district office. There were three (3) companies (120 men per company) within the security battalion. The battalion commander was also the district governer.

In fairly large cities, PW stated that the strength of the security unit was about a company or a platoon. These security unit personnel acted as civil police.

The summer uniform and the caps worn were yellow with no insignia or other markings. The winter uniform was dark green and cotton-stuffed. Fur-lined winter caps were worn.

The ages of the personnel of the security unit ranged from 16 to 30 years. All were WUTAOKOU (王道溝) area civilians who volunteered to serve with the security unit.

The security units did not make routine patrols of the above area and farmers’ villages. They only went out to investigated reported incidents. Other than that, the security units frequently participated in combat training such as problems in assaulting villages and target practice. Occasionally, the platoon got together and held critiques on the day’s activities.

Individuals who committed minor offenses such as public disorder or theft were given about three (3) days of political education by the platoon or squad leaders. However, major offenders were sent to the district security unit’s office and either received sentences or political education. All investigation reports were received by the local security unit CO before action was taken.

All orders to the security unit were dispatched from the provincial security office, down to the district, and then to the local security units.
