2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative, though information is generalized and limited. Information appears reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
Inducted into the CNA 37th Army at HUNANSHENG Aug 43. After receiving 3 months of basic infantry training, discharged Dec 43.
Joined the Provincial Security Guard Regt Dec 43 at HUNAN SHENG.
Aug 48, the Security Guard Regt reorganized as an Independent Brigade at HUPEI SHENG (湖北省).
Oct 48 at HUPEI SHENG Brigade integrated into CNA 118th Army. PW assigned to 118th Army, 298th Division.
118th Army surrendered to CCF 2d Field Army Dec 49 at CHENG TU (成都), and PW subjected to one month of Communist indoctrination.
Feb 50, the former CNA 118th Army personnel were taken to HUPEI SHENG and given an additional 6 months indoctrination.
May 50, while undergoing indoctrination, former 118th CNA Army was reorganized and designated as 167th Div of 50th Army, 4th Field Army. Former 118th Army CG, CHUNG Pin (重斌), became CG of CCF 167th Div. Placed into 1st Co, 1st Bn, 501st Regt, 167th Div, 50th Army.
50th Army left HUPEI SHENG by train Sep 50 and arrived at HAILUN HSIEN (海倫縣) Oct 50.
At HAILUN HSIEN, 167th Div deactivated and the 501st Regt redesignated as the 450th Regt and placed into 150th Division. Assigned to 7th Sqd, 3d Plat, 2d Co, 1st Bn, 450th Regt, 150th Div, 50th Army.
Nov 50, 50th Army left HAILUN HSIEN by train and arrived at ANTUNG (安東).
450th Regt left ANTUNG Nov 50, crossed the YALU River on foot, and arrived CH’OLSAN (XE 4304).
Regt Left CH’OLSAN on foot and arrived YANGSU-RI (CS 5154) Jan 51. A battle ensued in the above area for 3 days, causing the unit to retreat.
Surrendered his sqd in vic of CS 4557 to the US 24th RCT 28 Feb 51.
According to the Company Commander, 2d Co was to defend the present position in order to protect SEOUL.

d. Replacements
Between Jan and Feb 51 an unknown number of troops formerly with an attached unit of the 450th Regt, or 150th Div joined Company as replacements. No recent arrivals from CHINA.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies
Company had more than sufficient ammo.
Heard ammo acquired from the Bn Hq.
Soldiers ate twice daily with food, brought into Company area by company mess personnel. Believed food confiscated by CCF from Korean farmers.
Feb 51, soldiers received one pair of trousers each to wear over the winter clothing, and one pair of shoes.

g. Morale and Battle Effectiveness
Morale was low, and most of the soldiers were asking “Why are we fighting for the Koreans in KOREA? It does not benefit CHINA.”80% of Company personnel former CNA soldiers.

h. Medical
No epidemic in the PW unit.
No immunizations or other counter-measures taken by the troops since entering KOREA.
No severe frostbite cases in Company.

i. Psychological Warfare
PW once saw UN leaflets at place of capture. Heard loudspeaker broadcasts but incomprehensible because of the distance.
Leaflets said: “We will guarantee your life and will give you warm food and clothing.
Believed leaflets; however, there were some who had doubts.
Squad surrendered after having a conference on whether to surrender or not. Most of them agreed to surrender immediately because they felt that they would eventually be killed.
