FIELD REPORT (3rd Div IPW NO. 037) 3 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: SU Chen Chai (史建才)

DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: Captured at Mt KWANGYO-SAN (CS 2635), 3 Feb.

2. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
Surrendered to UN troops because his position on Mt PAEGUN-SAN (2000 meters NW of Mt KWANGYO-SAN CS 2635) became untenable due to intense UN artillery bombardment and infantry attacks. Decided to surrender because he would be killed anyway if he left his position and retreated.

3. ASSESSMENT:
Very cooperative and above average intelligence. Good memory. Physical condition - good. Reliability - fair.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Strength:

b. Unit Location:
2nd Bn Hq located in approx 20 caves dug in hills surrounding the village of KOGI-RI 261360. Hq was last seen 1800, 2 Feb 51.
447th Regt Hq located on slope of a Mt approx 6 km N of Mt PAEGUN-SAN 245352.
4th Co left its position on Mt KWANGYO-SAN (Hill 582) 2 Feb 51, due to intense UN artillery shelling and infantry attacks, and retreated to 2nd Bn Hq area.
5th Co dug-in positions along the S slope of Hill 61 (Mt PAEGUN-SAN) approx 100 meters below the summit. Since Hill 582 was captured by UN troops 1500, 2 Feb 51, 5th Co dug new positions on the upper slopes of Hill 61 facing Hill 582.
6th Co located in Bn Hq area and have been kept in reserve and as protection for Bn Hq.
445th and 446th Regt located in hills just N of 2nd Bn Hq area.

c. Unit Mission:
Mission of 447th Regt was to hold and defend the Mt KWANGYO-SAN (Hill 582) and Mt PAEGUN-SAN (Hill 61) area.
50th Army, composed of the 148th, 149th, and 150th Divisions, are the advance guards of the CCF Armies in this area and are to hold and defend their present positions until 38th and 39th Armies in the HAN River and SEOUL area have been reorganized, resupplied, and reequipped. 38th and 39th have been given two months (Beginning o/a 15 Jan 51) to do this. Heard this from this company’s political supervisor. Also heard that, CCF offensive would start after 38th and 39th Armies have been reorganized and re-equipped.

d. Weapons:
Co - LMG (Browning) - Six per Company.
HMG (Maxim M1931 with tripod) - Six per Company.
60mm mortars - Two per Company.
Bn - LMG (Browning) - Eighteen per Bn.
HMG (Maxim M1931 with tripod) - Six per Bn.
Regt - 82mm mortars - Number unk
Div Arty - 9 Howitzers (Caliber and make unk)

e. Reinforcements available:
445th and 446th Regt located just N of 2nd Bn Hq area.
38th and 39th Armies in the HAN River and SEOUL area.

f. UN night artillery bombardment:
PW claims that UN night artillery bombardment is not too accurate. Believes that it is responsible for about only three casualties out of every one hundred troops.
