2. ASSESSMENT:
PW is illiterate. He was a former ROK soldier before he was captured by the CCF 21 Dec 50.
The information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted into the ROK 21 Sep 50 at TAEGU, and assigned to the 8th ROK Div, 16th Regt, 2nd Bn, 6th Co, 2nd Plat, 3rd Sqd as a rifleman.
O/a 21 Dec 50, 16th Regt was encircled by CCF at HAENGSAN (BU8691) and was disorganized. PW was captured and then taken to the 6th NKA Div which was in this area. PW and twenty other ROK PW formed a unit which was designated as the Ind HMG Co. This unit, however, was not issued any arms; its assigned duty was to refine and pack rice in sacks for an unknown CCF unit. Daily at about 2000 hours, CCF troops with a horse-drawn cart came to haul the rice; an average of 220 kg of rice were hauled per night.
On 30 Dec 50, departed with this Independent HMG Plat southward via mountain route, and arrived HONGCHON (DS1371) o/a 14 Jan 51. For a period of ten days, received political training with the 2nd HMG Co.
25 Jan 51, departed southward arriving TAGISAN (DS3762) the following day. Here, the HMG Co was deactivated and its troops were assigned to units of the 6th Div. PW was assigned to the 1st Sqd, 2nd Plat, 5th Co, of an unknown Bn and Regt as a mess orderly.
14 Feb 51, the 6th Div was attacked by the ROK 5th Div, and, during this battle, PW deserted and voluntarily surrendered.

b. Location and Activities of Unit:
Observed units of the 6th Div preparing defensive positions on TAGISAN (DS3762) mountain 14 Feb 51.
Observed the CP of 6th Div located at HORYOGBONG (DS6082) 1 Feb 51.

c. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food was obtained through confiscation.
6th Div received no new ammo supply while with the unit.

d. Signal:
Believed all units of the 6th Div used telephones for communication because there was a telephone in the 5th Co.
Runners also were used.

e. Morale:
Morale of the 6th Div troops was low because of the insufficient amount of food, clothing, and weapons.

f. UN PW:
PW was among seven ROK troops captured at MAENGSAN o/a 21 Dec 50. All ROK PW underwent political training for a period of a week to a month, and were then assigned to various NKA units. If a PW seemed fully convinced, he was assigned to a front line unit; otherwise, he was assigned duties as a KP or supply bearer under surveillance.
Received good treatment after being captured by the NKA.

g. Medical:
Approx 30 men of the 5th Co, 6th Div were suffering from frostbite and frozen feet. Received minor treatment and were forced to remain with the unit.

h. Psychological Warfare:
Surrendered because he states that he was a former ROK soldier, and did not believe in communism.

i. Comfort girls:
There were approx 20 “Amazon” troops with the 5th Co. These women carried weapons and entered combat with the men. The battle efficiency of these women was poor; PW believes that these women were employed for the sole purpose of comforting the men (women and men slept in same foxholes).

For the AC of S, G-2:

HONG
