The 9th Div has not been in much combat; casualties were caused by frost bit and UN air strikes.

b. Location and Activities of Unit:
There was no known specific mission for the 9th Div. 5 Feb 51, the entire 9th Div moved eastward toward PYONGCHANG (DS4735)

c. Chronology:
Inducted into the NKA 18 Apr 50 at WONSAN (CU6535). PW assigned to the newly activated Arty Regt, 12th Div with 1,000 conscripts. For about a month, the conscripts underwent training which consisted of gun firing only. There were 10 x 120mm mortars in the 3rd Bn; 10 x 76mm field gun M1943 “ZIS 3” in the 2nd Bn and 10 x 122mm howitzers, M1938, in the 1st Bn. 20 May 50 PW was selected together with 100 others to attend an officer cadet school in PYONGYANG (平壤). At this school, PW was taught to fire the 122mm howitzer and the nomenclature.
8 Jul 50 PW graduated with the rank of Jr 2nd Lt, and was assigned to the 7th Div, Arty Regt, 3rd Bn, 7th Co, 3rd Plat as Plat Ldr. The following day, PW marched with the 7th Div southward to KAESONG (開城) 9 Jul 50. 7th Div, Arty Regt was activated and had no guns at that time.

The 7th Div rested in CHINJU for approx 1 week and then proceeded toward the NAKTONG River. Arrived at an unknown location on the NAKTONG River during the early Sep 50.
When the NAKTONG River was reached, the Arty Regt, 7th Div was replaced by the Arty Regt of the 9th Div which had 3 x 122mm howitzers and 5 x 76mm field guns. There were sufficient amounts of ammo for thse guns. PW was transferred to the 9th Div and during mid-Sep 50, tretreated northward with the division via mountain route, arriving at KULHWA Nov 50.
The 9th Div hid in the mountains util Dec 50. Here the Arty Regt was redesignated as the Arty Bn because it suffered heavy casualties. 20 Dec 50, the 9th Div advanced southward via mountain routes, passing through the following places:

From HOENGSON, marched eastward to MASI RI 4 Feb 51. PW was separated from his unit because of a cold (Headache and backache). 9th Div proceeded eastward toward PYONGCHANG 6 Feb 51.
PW was captured while recuperating.

d. Personalities:
KWON, Yong Bok (권영복), Capt, CO, 1st Co, Arty Bn, 9th Div.

e. Replacements:
The 9th Div has never received replacements.

f. Supplies:
Food was obtained through confiscation.

g. Signal:
Telephones was utilized in all units of the 9th Div. Runners were also used.

h. Morale:
Morale was low because of lack of weapons, food and clothing.

i. Medical:
Approx 20% of the soldiers were suffering from frost bit and frozen feet. These cases were evacuated to the rear on stretchers.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW was captured and had never seen any leaflets.
