FIELD REPORT (521 - LDI - 0422) 11 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Source was very cooperative and answered questions freely to his knowledge during interrogation.
Length of Service: 10 mo
Education: Primary School (6 yr)
Reliability: Good

3. CHRONOLOGY:
18 Apr 50 - Conscripted into service at WONSAN with 300 others. Received one month tng with the 7th Div, Arty Regt in WONSAN.
20 May 50 - Source with 100 others from the Arty Regt was sent to P’YONGYANG Arty School.
8 Jul 50 -Graduated, and received commission of Jr Lt.
Sep 50 - Assigned to the 9th Div, Div Arty.
Late Dec 50 - 9th Div at KUMHWA
O/a 1 Jan 51 - 9th Div with strength of approx 3,500 crossed the 38th Parallel. Arty Regt contacted elements of ROKA and suffered hvy casualties. There-after, the Arty Regt was reorganized into a Arty Bn and had no Arty pieces.
O/a 9 Jan 51 - Arty Bn with the 3rd Regt bypassed CHUNGHON.
O/a 20 Jan 51 - 9th Div arr HYONGCHONG GUN. Arty Bn occupied mountain in vicinity of MASHIL NI.
O/a 25 Jan 51 - 9th Div arr vicinity of P’YONGCHANG. 1st and 2nd Regt of the 9th Div contacted elements of ROKA. Suffered high casualties from Arty fire and retreated north.
29 Jan 51 - 9th Div arr HYONGCHONG GUN, TUM NAE MYON. Div suffered slight casualties from constant air attacks.
5 Feb 51 - 9th Div dep for an unk destination east of PYONGCHONG. Source was left behind at MASHIL NI with two sick soldiers.
6 Feb 51 - All three were captured by 5th ROK Div.

4. STRENGTH: (Arty Bn)

9th Div was composed of 3 Inf Regt and one Arty Bn. Overall strength of approx 3,000 troops. No arty units were attached to the Regt. Strength of Inf Units were unk. No Arty pieces.

5. PERSONALITIES:

6. WEAPONS AND AMMO:
(a) 82mm mortars: Each n with exception of the 1st Bn(two) had one mortar, and approx 20 rd. 10 mortars in Div.
(b) 7.62mm “MAXIM” HMG; 2nd and 3rd Bn had 3 each, and the 1st Bn with four. Each with about 1,000 rd. (10 in Div)
(c) 7.62mm (DP) LMG: Each Bn had 5-6 LMG and about 500 rd each.

7. SUPPLY:
(a) Food: Food was obtained at villages.
(b) Ammo: Was supplied to troops at a unk village before crossing the 38th Parallel in Jan 51, and three-after no resupply was available.

8. REPLACEMENT:
Unit depended on conscription of men from occupied villages but such personnel were scarce.

9. INTENTION:
Guerrilla activity, destination unk.

10. MORALE:
Morale was low, due to insufficiency of food and constant air attack.

11. SIGNAL:
Six field phones were the only available means of com for the 9th Div.

12. MEDICAL:
Some of the soldiers contacted an unk disease which caused headaches and stomach pains. No Med attention were available for them and they were usually left in villages.
