2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was slightly wounded on the left foot but appeared to be in fair condition during interrogation. PW was a farmer prior to volunteering for the CNA. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Information is considered reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

The majority of the casualties were caused by Arty fire, and only a few by small arms fire.
PW observed 4 howitzers (type unk) 8 Jan 51 at SEOUL. Each howitzer was towed by a horse. PW stated that the above arty pieces belong to the Arty Regt attached to the 50th Army. The Mortar Co (atchd to 447th Regt) had 4 x 82mm M1937 mortars. The Mortar Sqd (atchd to 2nd Plat) had two 60mm mortars. Each rifleman was armed with a Chinese type rifle and 4 band-grenades. Each Co was equipped with 6 M1946 LMG.

b. Mission:
PW Co received orders from the 3rd Bn Hq 22 Jan 51, to defend vic CS295335.

c. Disposition:
3rd Bn was located approx 4 km N of CS295335. 8 Jan 51, PW observed small elements of the 39th and 40th CCF Army and approximately and Div of NK (designation unk), in SEOUL.

d. Communication:
Telephones and runners were used for communications between units.

e. Personalities:
KAO, Chan-shien (高占山) CO, 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 447th Regt, 149th Div

f. Morale:
The morale of PW unit was low for following reasons:
(1) Men detested fighting
(2) Fear of air attacks
(3) Lack of food
(4) Insufficient clothing
(5) Exhaustion

g. Chronology:
PW volunteered for the CNA Airborne Unit in Apr 47 at TUNGSHAN-HSIEN (碭山縣). PW was captured and integrated into the CCF 50th Army 1 Jan 50 at SZECHWAN (四川). The 50th Army arrived at ANTUNG in late Aug 50 and remained there until late Sep 50 regrouping. The 447th Regt crossed the border from ANTUNG on foot in late Sep 50. The 447th Regt arrived at SEOUL 6 Jan 51. PW does not know the exact route taken to SEOUL. The Regt walked over the frozen HAN River 8 Jan 51 arriving in vic CS295335 12 Jan 51. The Regt rested at this location for approx 10 days. 22 Jan 51, the Regt marched southward for 16 km, where they encountered unknown elements of UN forces and withdrew back to CS295335 arriving 24 Jan 51. The 3rd Bn, 447th Regt held a defensive line at this location until 30 Jan 51. 30 Jan 51, while the Bn was pinned down by UN air and ground attacks, PW came out from his foxhole with his hands up to surrender.

h. Food and Ammo Supplies:
PW unit had not received and food supply since crossing the border. The men ate Korean food which was gathered from the villages. Ammo was insufficient. 30 Jan 51, each rifleman had approx 40 rd of ammo. Each LMG had approx 400 rd of ammo.
Clothing - 29 Jan 51, each squad was issued 4 pairs of rubber shoes. No other clothing available since the unit crossed the border.

i. Replacements:
PW unit did not received any replacements. Hospitalized patients, upon recovering were returned to their original units.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW did not see any UN Leaflets nor hear of any UN aerial broadcasts.

k. Prisoners of War:
O/a the night of 8 Jan 51, PW observed approx 20 US PW marching in SEOUL.

l. Foreign Technicians:
There was one Chinese interpreter (Korean) attached to each Co.

m. Medical:
PW did not receive any type of immunization. Approx 10% of the men in each Co had malaria. No medical treatment was given to malaria victims. No preventive method is used. Many suffered from frozen feet.

n. Where and When PW Crossed the HAN River:
PW crossed the HAN River 8 Jan 51, on foot over the ice (Vic SEOUL, exact location unk)

o. Effectiveness of Night Bombing:
PW did not witness any night bombing.
