1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

PLACE OF CAPTURE: UIJUN-RI, Approximately 12 Km S of CHISO-DONG (DR 9923)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW at first hestitant, then became cooperative. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission:
Security Bn strength of approx 500, which is attached to 10th Div, acted as forward guard to secure WOLMAE DONG (ER 0208). 25th Regt was to join them later (o/a 4 Feb 51). PW assumed that 10th Div CP already at WOLMAE DONG, due to the fact that mission of Security Bn was to safeguard 10th Div Hq. Patrol’s mission; to act as forward observer and obtain information UN strength and disposition.

b. Strength of Unit: Present strength of 25th Regt, as of 30 Jan 51.
Approx 1000 - at TUMA-RI (ER 0202)
25th Regt consisted of the following:
3 Bn strength unknown plus 1 Recon Unit of 36 men.
29th Regt and 27th Regt strength and location unk; were last seen together near ANDONG (DR 7546) o/a 25 Jan 51.
Code Name: POM (虎) referred to Recon Patrol.
#747 was used by higher officials in Bn but PW does not know how and when used.

c. Chronology:
14 Feb 49 - Conscripted at TON-MYON, ANJU-GUN. Received 2 months training. Had approx 4 months bivouac training, hauled military supplies in NORTH KOREA till outbreak of war.
25 Jun 50 - Crossed 38th Parallel from CHORWON, with Mort Co of 3rd Bn, 7th Regt, 3rd Div. Objective; SEOUL.
31 Jun 50 - Unit assembled at SEOUL and advance toward TAEGU.
31 Aug 50 - Contracted Malaria at YONG-DONG; later joined 7th Regt near NAKTONG River.
27 Sep 50 - 7th Regt retreated to YONG-DONG (CR 9003) from SANJU (DR 2530). Here PW deserted the Army with the intention of returning home (NORTH KOREA).
17 Dec 50 - Deserters gathered. “Unit 39” originated. Strength, 450.
22 Dec 50 - “Unit 39” made part of 10th Div 25th Regt at HWACH’ON.
26 Dec 50 - 10th Div crossed 38th Parallel without resistance.
10 Jan 51 - Heard 25th Regt engaged in brief fire fight with ROK 28 miles N of WONJU. Results unk.
25 Jan 51 - 25th Regt strafed by American jets. No casulties; approx 20 houses burnt.
26 Jan 51 - 25th Regt arrived at WOLGYON (approx 7 miles S of CHISO-DONG (DR 9923).
27 Jan 51 - Arrived PONGKE-RI (approx 14 miles S of DR 9923). 10th Div assembled here.
30 Jan 51 - 25th Regt arrived at TUMA-RI (ER 0202).
31 Jan 51 - 25th Regt inflicted heavy casualties due to UN artillery barrage at UIJONG (approx 4 miles N of TUMA-RI ER 0202). 25th Regt retreated to WOLMAE-DONG (ER 0208). 25th Regt CP was to be at WOLMAE-DONG (ER 0208) o/a 5th Feb 51.
2 Feb 51 - PW was left in village and picked up by Korean Police at UIJYUN-NI.

d. Personalities:
Plat Ldr - Jr Lt LEE, Chun Ik (李■益)

e. Weapons and Equipment: Independent Reconnaissance Plat had:
2 Carbines - 150 rd
30 PPsh SMG - 70 rd
4 Pistols - 64 rd
3 pr Field Glasses - Made in USA and Russia.

f. Other Units:
Last heard 27th and 29th Regt to be near ANDONG o/a 15 Jan 51.

g. Morale - 50% of reconnaissance patrol fought for existence only.

h. Weapons Most Feared:
Artillery barrage and air attacks most feared by enemy.

i. Recon Tactics:
Reconnaissance patrol were well disciplined and trained. They had camouflaged clothes and usually went out on patrol at midnight, returning before daybreak. Their mission was to obtain information concerning UN strength and disposition; if possible not to engage the enemy (UN).
Usually worked in teams of 5, all taking same route to and from point of departure. Also obtained information from villagers. All scouts made sketches of landscapes and UN position.
