ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 3176　5 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1421)　26 January 1951

Cooperative. PW apparently in good physical condition.

Information is somewhat limited because PW had little opportunity to have access to details about his unit and its activities.

Information reliable.

PW was inducted into the Engr Bn of the 2nd NKA Div on 3 May 50 at HAMHUNG (CV7417). There he received 4 months basic infantry training. In the meantime (during Jun 50) the entire 2nd Div departed southward from HAMHUNG leaving behind only relatively recent conscripts like PW.

PW departed from HAMHUNG with approx 50 replacements for the 2nd Div during the first part of Sep 50, and traveled via the following route.

Upon arriving at TAEJON, PW and the 50 other 2nd Div replacements learned that the NKA was retreating to North Korea. Thereupon the 50 replacements separated, each man with intentions of returning to his respective home. As PW and one other replacement walked northward through the SOBAEK SAN and TAEBAEK SAN mountain ranges, they were gradually joined by other NKA retreatees whom they proceeded with and arrived in the vicinity of HUICHON (CV6968) during the latter part of Oct 50. There the 2nd Div was in the process of reorganization. PW was immediately assigned to the Engr Co of the 2nd Div. At HUICHON, infantry soldiers were issued an unknown amount of rifle ammunition (source of ammo unknown). All personnel were issued cotton-padded winter uniforms (source of uniforms unknown).

Troops bivouacked in villages whenever possible. Towns and large villages were avoided because of the danger from aircraft. When the 2nd Div Hq was forced to “bivouac” in the mountains because no relatively safe villages were nearby, personnel, bivouac sites that afford some shelter from the wind were selected. No tents were pitched (the 2nd Div Hq has no tents) and no fires were permitted (for fear of attracting the attention of UN forces). Foxholes and trenches were rarely dug.

PW believed that most of the 2nd Div Hq personnel were killed by UN artillery o/a 16 Jan 51.

The 2nd Div received an unknown number of replacements during Sep and Oct 50. Replacements were comprised of South Korean civilians conscripted by the NKA during its Sep 50 retreat and from stragglers from the other retreating NKA units.

The 2nd Div Hq personnel and those of units directly attached to the division headquarters, received no regular rations but personnel subsisted by gathering all food that could be carried from villages through which the 2nd Div Hq passed.

An unknown amount of small arms ammo was issued to the 2nd Div while it was reorganizing in the vicinity of HUICHON during Oct 50. Source of ammo is unknown to PW.

Observed none but supposes some light artillery.

Most personnel of the 2nd Div Hq have been frostbitten and can see no quick end to the war in KOREA.

10. CCF:

Observed thousands of CCF personnel scattered throughout the mountains around HUICHON during early Nov 50 when the 2nd Div Hq departed from HUICHON. No other info on CCF.
