PW NAME: NA Yong Hyok (19)
RANK: Pvt
DUTY: Trainee
UNIT: VI Corps
PLACE AND DATE OF CAPTURE: KUNURI 1700 15 Nov 50

3. CHRONOLOGY:
14 Oct 50 PW conscripted into the VI Corps at KAECH’ON-GUN, PUK MYON, WONRI (YE5106). Heard that he was assigned to VI Corps but did not know where or when this unit was organized. PW observed approx 1,000 men in this unit when he joined unit but heard from soldiers that there were approx 40,000 men in VI Corps.
15 Oct 50 PW and approx 1,000 men in column of 3 and more than 1 Km long left WON-RI (YE5106) and arrived at CHONGSON-GIN (XE5574) o/a 25 Oct 50. The unit did not have any weapons. 19 Oct 50 when this unit was resting on the way to CHONGSON-GIN approx 1,000 men passed his unit. Heard from his friend in this unit that this was part of the VI Corps and that they were going North (destination unknown).
1700 28 Oct 50 after staying at CHONGSON-GIN (XE5574) for 3 days, the unit received orders from Corps’ commander that they were to go to HUANJEN, MANCHURIA (125°20’-41°20’).
1800 3 Nov 50 the elements of VI Corps (approx 1,000 men) arrived at HUANJEN by foot. PW did not know the objective of this unit but heard rumors that because they were all recruits they were to receive training there.

Food Supplies:
During this unit’s travel to MANCHURIA, the troops were fed rice which was drawn out from government warehouses (tax rice) at each village they stopped.
When they crossed the border into MANCHURIA, they separated into small groups of 20-30 men at each village that they stopped and each group went to different houses to obtain food. A receipt was given for the food. They also told them to prepare corn flour because they might come later to pick them up.
PW did not receive any uniform when he joined the 6th Corps at WONRI buy when they were heading for MANCHURIA they received their winter uniform at YONGBYON (YE4011) on 16 Oct 50. This uniform consisted of a pair of tennis shoes, cotton padded trousers and coat.

Route:
During their travel to MANCHURIA, the unit traveled by night, usually taking main road up to CHONGSON-GIN (XE5574). During the day, the troops rested in the mountains. 1700 28 Oct 50 elements of VI Corps crossed the concrete bridge at CHONGSON-GIN and once across the border, they traveled by day and rested at night in the mountain. The unit passed through many villages but only knows KUANGEN (124°42’-40°40’).
4 Nov 50 PW & 25 men with 13 trucks were detailed to pick up rice for the unit at CHONGSON-GIN. The rice was piled up at the foot of mountain located approx 8 km S of this location. Did not know the amount but there were 2 piles approx 10 meters in length, 5 meters in width and 3 meters high.
2000 4 Nov 50 when they arrived at this location, PW escaped and was captured on the way to his home at KUNURI 1700 15 Nov 50.
1400 10 Nov 50 observed 4 medium tanks parked on the side of the mountain in the vic of YONGBYON (YE4011) but did not see any troops nearby. Heard from civilian that these were NK tanks and also that all NK troops left this town (date unk).
1200 12 Nov 50 observed approx 300 CCFs at YONGBYON, climbing up the mountain on the S side of town. Heard from civilian that they stayed in the mountain and also that they come down to the village to pick up food, but did not know when they arrived or what their objective was. Only weapons observed were rifles. 1800 14 Nov 50 in the vicinity of YONGBYON (YE4011), he heard from civilians that several hundred CCF troops withdrew from this area to KOSONG (YE4519) (date unknown).

4. MORALE:
Believes that the moral is low because there were lots of men escaping when they were headed for MANCHURIA. Also believes that troops were disappointed when they crossed the YALU River to MANCHURIA because they wondered why they had to leave their country and another reason was that they were in the Army in KOREA, the chance of escaping was good but once in MANCHURIA, the chances are slim because they do not understand Chinese language.

5. PROPAGANDA:
Heard from an officer that after this unit (VI Corps) is trained and since CCF troops are fighting with NK troops they will join them and fight against the UN forces and victory will be theirs.
Also heard from the same officer that approx 80,000 CCF troops are fighting along side NK troops.

6. PERSONALITIES:
VI Corps CG: KIM Sung Hun (36) (Hearsay)

For the AC of S, G-2:
