1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative, but was able to furnish only limited information. He is not alert and is unfamiliar with the military service.

3. T/O & E OF UNIT:
Composition of the 9th Division was unknown.
The Independent Battalion was activated in August 50 as an artillery unit. In that no guns were available, the battalion performed regular infantry duties.
The arty bn was composed of 3 arty btry’s.
Each btry was composed of 3 plats.
Each Plat was composed of 2 sqds.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS (as of 7 Dec 50)
The 9th Division headquarters was located in SACHO RI, approx 10 km NE of YONGCHON.
The Independent Battalion headquarters was located approx 4 km NE of YONGCHON. The battalion arrived here o/a 30 Nov 50 from the CHORWON (CT4435) area for unknown reasons. It utilized a previously constructed defense position for approx 6 days before withdrawing from advancing ROK forces.
PW remained behind and was captured 7 Dec 50.

5. PERSONNEL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted 19 Jul 50 at KAESONG:
Received no training and was assigned to the present unit.
The entire Independent Battalion departed KAESONG by train and arrived at SUWON o/a 24 Aug 50:
The entire battalion marched from SUWON toward the South and was engaged in security duties in the NAKTONG River area.
O/a 18 Sep 50, the battalion retreated toward the North through the SOBAEK mountain range and along the eastern coast.
After arriving at KUMHWA, (CT6538) the battalion did not go north, but remained in the CHORWON and KUMHWA areas.
PW did not know where the 9th Division was reorganized.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
An average of 2 meals per day where received by the troops.
Food was confiscated from farmers in the various villages.
No ammo supplies were received by the Arty Bn after its initial issue. A limited amount of ammo was salvaged by the unit during their withdrawal from the south.

8. MORALE:
Morale was low due to the lack of arms and supplies.
The PW was told of the CCF’s intervention and of their capturing P’YONGYANG, but no improvement of the troops’ morale was noted.

9. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
PW did not surrender voluntarily. He was captured when he remained in his position after his unit withdrew.
b. Did you see United Nations leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?
PW did not see leaflets nor did he hear radio broadcasts.
c. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts?
Negative.
