PW appeared to be of average intelligence. He was cooperative and talked freely.

Length of service: 1 month

17 Aug 50 - Inducted at SOSE (approx 8 km W of YONGDONGPO) and attached to SOSE Training Camp.

Received 15 days training.

9 Sep 50 - Arrived KEPUNGUN (about 15 km S of KAESONG) and was attached to 107 Regt, 33 Bn, 2 Co.

25 Sep 50 - 33 Bn departed KEPUNGUN and arrived YONGJONG and stayed there 2 days.

27 Sep 50 - 33 Bn arrived HWASUNMYON (10 km NW of KUMPO) and stayed there 2days.

30 Sep 50 - 33 Bn retreated to KAESONG and PW deserted to HWASUNMYON.

Strength of 33 Bn, 107 Regt estimated at approx 600 men. This Bn had never engaged in battle,

30 LMGs. 70% of the men were equipped with rifle and 75 to 80 rds of ammunition and 1 hand grenade each.

Morale of 33 Bn was low. Troops were always ready to retreat or desert. As soon as they heard American troops were coming, they retreated. Food - 3 meals a day. 1 rice ball per meal.

PW and two Cos of the 33 Bn were ordered to dig a trench on the side of a mountain N of the HAN river.

Exact length of the trench unknown, however, it extended all along the HAN river. Trenches were also dug on the side of mountain S of the HAN river.

No weapons such as machine guns or arty guns were emplaced. Trenches were located 1 to 2 km away from the river at approx 20 to 30m elevation. (See sketch attached.)
