ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1639　4 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0989)　1 October 1950

PW was suffering from hemorrhoids and seemed to be in pain throughout the interrogation. He talked freely but was rather inattentive during the questioning. Claims he was only a Pvt in the Guard Co and knew little of the organization of the GHQ. He often made contradictory statements and seemed to have difficulty remembering precise facts. He did not appear to be very intelligent. PW considered unreliable.

15 Mar 50 - Inducted into the NKPA at P'YONGYANG where he received 3 months basic training. Assigned to 571st Guard Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co.

23 Jun 50 - Departed P'YONGYANG with his company.

O/a 3 Jul 50 - Company arrived in SEOUL and became to the Guard Co for the GHQ. Other units of the Regts were heard to be performing guard duty for Corps Hqs.

O/a 3 Aug 50 - GHQ and PW's Co moved to SOHAP'O (西河浦) somewhere SE of CH'UNGJU, exact location unknown.

O/a 13 Aug 50 - PW platoon left SOHAP'O as on advance party for a contemplated move of the GHQ.

14 Aug 50 - Arrived in SANGJU. Prepared a site for occupancy by GHQ at a hill 4 km S of SANGJU where PW prepared a tunnel to be used for the GHQ offices.

18 Aug 50 - GHQ arrived at SANGJU.

30 Aug 50 - Arrived at a point about 12 km SE of KUMCH'ON, at a large temple. A tunnel near the temple was prepared for the GHQ staff.

10 Sep 50 - GHQ arrived at the new Hq near KUMCH'ON.

22 Sep 50 - GHQ evacuated their Hq by Staff cars and jeeps toward SANGJU. KIM, Chaek, the commander of NKPA operation in S. KOREA was also in this retreating party.

PW's platoon was left behind to remove the lumber used for beams and pillars in the tunnel. Purpose of this removal unknown.

24 Sep 50 - PW's platoon departed north and arrived at a point 4 km S of SANGJU on 25 Sep 50. Here as they discovered that UN troops had already occupied SANGJU the platoon leader lead his platoon to the hills.

26 Sep 50 - PW walked into SANGJU and surrendered to UN troops.

571st Guard Regt was composed of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bns with about 760 men each. The 571st Guard Regt Hq remained in P'YONGYANG when PW's company moved to S. KOREA. He heard that the 571st Guard Regt was enlarged into a Brigade, but disposition of the units was not known.

Supreme Commander of NKPA. This man was not in GHQ, but PW saw him in P'YONGYANG.

PW heard he was killed near SANGJU when his car hit a land mine.

The following personalities were seen by the PW at GHQ: (Name Unknown):

3. Naval Officer (Position unknown) Rank: Rear Admiral (少將)

4. Air Force Officer: Rank: Lt Gen (中將)

There were six (6) Russian advisors attached to GHQ. 22 Sep 50. There wore uniforms while in N KOREA, but changed to civilian clothes after crossing the 38˚ Parallel.

PW did not know the Russians names.

PW last saw these advisors at GHQ near KUMCH'ON o/a 11 Sep 50. He did not see them during the evacuation of GHQ o/a 22 Sep 50.

The GHQ had a signal unit (size unknown) which transmitted message by wireless to Corps. PW saw telephone wires installed, but did not see actual use of telephones.

The PW's Guard Company's morale was very high when GHQ moved to the KUMCH'ON Area, but when GHQ retreated the men lost some of their confidence.

The GHQ, after living SEOUL, was always set up in caves and was well camouflaged, so it was never subjected to air attack. PW believed that the GHQ headed toward SANGJU after evacuating the Hq KUMCH'ON. Since SANGJU and SEOUL are in UN hands he believed that old Hq at CH'ORWON or P'YONGYANG is presently being used.
