Cooperative, seems fairly reliable.

Military History:
Inducted on 8 Dec 48 at KANGDONG. Assigned to 1919 Border Patrol Unit at MUSAN. From 25 Mar 50 to 30 Jun 50 trained with 5121 NCO Training Bn (approx 500 trainees) at SINCHON. Upon completion some were promoted to Jr Lt and M/Sgt.
The 3rd Regt activated on 3 to 7 Jul 50 at HAEJU to train newly conscripted recruits (approx 2,500) from P’YONGAN PUK-TO and PYONGAN NAM-DO as 3rd Independent Regt. Troops trained for 20 days.
Departed HAEJU by train - arrived SEOUL 31 Jul 50.
Departed SEOUL 1 Aug 50 - marched - arrived YONGDUNGP’O 2 Aug 50.
Departed YONGDUNGP’O - 4 Aug 50 - marched via SUWON, P’YONGTAEK TAEJON NAMWON, CHINJU arriving at KOSONG, 15 Aug 50. 1st Bn and 3rd Co, 3rd Bn separated from other unit at KOSONG, 15 Aug 50 and marched toward T’ONGYONG. 1st Bn arrived at T’ONGYONG and engaged in battle. Informant wounded and captured. Before departure from HAEJU the Bn CO told the PW that the 3rd Regt would be added to the 7th Div.

Weapons and Personnel:
3rd Regt composed of 3 rifle battalions, band platoon, Submachine gun Co (100 men with sub-machine guns), 120-mm Mortar Co, (5 120-mm Mortars), 76-mm Field Gun Co, Signal Co, a Recon platoon. (40 men with sub-machine guns, LMGs and rifles), Engr platoon (30 men with shovels, picks, explosives), Medic platoon.
1st Bn composed of 3 rifle companies, HMG Co (70 men with 6 HMGs), 82-mm Mortar Co (5 x 82-mm Mortars), Transportation Plat (2 oxcarts) and AT rifle platoon (9 x 14.5—AT rifles).
2nd Company composed of three riffle platoons and HMG platoon (2 x HMGs).
Rifle platoons composed of 40 men with 4 LMG’s, 280 rounds per LMG; 5 Submachine guns (200 rounds each; 31 Russian-make rifles, 70 rounds each.

Disposition of above Unit:
3rd Regt CP with 2nd Bn located at KOSONG, 19 Aug 50.
1st Bn, 3rd Regt and 3rd Co, 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt (total approx 450 men) located near TONGYONG.

Estimated Strength of above Unit:
Suffered light casualties from air attacks until 19 Aug 50.
First combat operation for 3rd Regt 19 Aug 50. Unit composed of recruits with very little training.

Armor:
4 tanks (type unknown) observed S of P’YONGTAEK during night of 6 Aug 50.

Artillery:
No information.

Food and Ammunition Supplies:
Approximately 20 trucks with ammunition and food camouflaged with leaves and branches observed nightly during the hours 2200 to 0300 moving S along the way from SEOUL to SUWON, PYONGTAEK, CHONAN, TAEJON, KUMSAN, MUJU, KOCHANG to CHINJU.
5 to 6 trucks usually travelled in one group.

Replacements:
Hearsay: The 3rd Regt was the last replacement unit trained in N KOREA composed entirely of North Koreans.

Enemy Intentions:
Troops were told by battalion commander never to surrender and if captured never to disclosed military secrets.
Last objective of 1st Bn, 3rd Regt was T’ONGYONG 19 Aug 50.

Morale:
Morale of troops was low because of poor food rations and long forced marches.

American PsW:
Approx 70 US PW’s observed approx 20 km N of TAEJON, 8 Aug 50 marching northward.

S. Korean Sentiments:
Villages were usually deserted when the N. Korean Army entered.
