ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 660　21 August 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - FEAF LN TEAM - 0159)　15 August 1950

Subject stated that he was dissatisfied with war deserted his unit after they had crossed the NAKTONG River on the 11th of August. Subject rested one day in the rice fields and on the following day was captured by a patrol of United States troops. Subject surrendered on his own accord.

Commanding General of the 10th Division - KIM TAI HONG (김대홍) Major General (one star) Age: 33.

Commanding Officer of the 29th Regiment - CHUL U (최우) Lt Colonel, Age: 25.

Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion - KIM CHONG TAL (김정달) Major (drowned at HEIJO while bathing, new Commanding Officer’s name unknown).

Commanding Officer of the 2nd Company - CHANG SEI HO (張세호) Lt, Age: 26.

Leader of the 2nd Platoon - YOO CHONG YUL (애정율) Junior Lt, Age: 22.

Leader of the 1st Squad - HWANG KYUNG HWA (黃경화) Sergeant, Age: 24.

Subject received training at SUKCHON from the 15th of April to the 22 of June 1950. Subject trained with the 6th Unit of the 2nd Minsei Kunrensho, which was composed of three Battalions with a total number of 2,500 troops including officers. There were also the 4th and 5th Units of the No. 2 Minsei Kunrensho training at SUCHOI. On the 20 of May they were given Regiment numbers under the 10th Division. The 6th Unit became the 29th Regiment. The 4th, 5th and 6th Units departed from SUCHON on the 22 of June, however on arrival at HEIJO (PYONGYANG) subject observed only the 6th Unit was assembled there. The unit received rifles and was given training in manual of arms, rifle firing (two rounds at 100 m distance), nomenclature of tommy gun, light machine gun, heavy machine gun, and rifle. Training in heavy machine gun, light machine gun and tommy gun was only superficial. They also received training with wooden model grenades (offensive and defensive); no live rounds were used until unit departed for the front lines. Subject did not receive bayonet training. He observed other units which were receiving training with Anti-Aircraft machine guns and trench mortars (about 82 mm).

The 29th Regiment departed from PYONGYANG on the 25th of July by train. Subject observed freight cars with trucks, artillery pieces, food cars, and a boxcar with ten oxen as part of the train. The Regiment went by train as far as CHONAN, arriving there on the 30th of July. They detrained once at KEIJO (SEOUL) when they had to cross the HAN River by foot as railroad bridges had been destroyed. From CHONAN, the 29th Regiment marched on foot via KUMSAN to a mountainous area just west of WAEGWAN, where they stayed for twenty-four hours before the Regiment crossed the NAKTONG River. Subject waded across the NAKTONG River and observed that heavy weapons had already been transported across.

10th Division (Infantry)

Squads are normally composed of 8 men as follow:

1 squad leader - Sergent

1 assistant squad leader - Squad Sergent

1 or 2) inter - Corporal

4 or 5) changes Private

(Note: Subject’s squad had ten men).

Platoons are composed of three squads plus platoon leader (Jr. Lt.) and assistant platoon leader (Senior Sergeant). Subject’s platoon and only two squads.

Companies are composed of three platoons plus Company Commander (Lt), and assistant Commanding Officer (Lt) who was also cultural officer, and a master sergeant in charge of intendence (food, clothing, fiance).

There were 2,500 personnel including officers when the 29th Regiment was training in HEIJO.

Other Regiments are believed to be of the same organization.
